Cryosurgery. Reloaded and renewed.

The therapeutic use of cold has been known throughout the history of mankind. The therapeutic effect of locally applied cold to stop bleeding from wounds and in traumatic shock was described as far back as Hippocrates. Although treatment with cold has a history as long as medicine itself, it was only from the second half of the 19th century that cryosurgery became an independent and promising field of science and practice [1–3]. From 1961 onwards, cryosurgery began to be widely introduced across various branches of medicine. The advance of scientific and technological progress supported this and made it possible to use low temperatures for therapeutic purposes [3]. Analysing the emergence and development of cryosurgery over 50 years, several stages can be distinguished.
Despite all the difficulties associated with material and technical equipment, cryosurgery today remains a promising field.
